San Diego scored the decisive runs in a big 8th inning with 3 runs on 4 base hits. After an out was recorded, Ed Spiezio initiated the scoring spurt when he doubled. Cito Gaston was next and he lined a one-base hit knocking in a run. Chris Cannizzaro then laced a base-hit. Joe Niekro followed and he delivered a single driving in another run. Jose Arcia stepped into the box and drew a walk to load the bases. Tommy Dean kept things alive and drew a walk scoring the final run of the inning. Neither team was able to score until the 8th inning. Niekro(2-1) was the winner allowing 1 run in 7 and 1/3 innings. Frank Reberger recorded the save, his 3rd. Jim Merritt(1-2) was hit with the loss. The score was knotted at 1 after nine innings. Seattle ended up winning it in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, John Kennedy keyed the rally when he drew a walk.
